How We Rate Spice Levels (And Why It's Not a Vibe)

Every book on SpicyShelf gets a spice rating from 1 to 5, and it's the single most-used filter on the site. It's classification, not critique — a 1-pepper book isn't "better" than a 5-pepper one, it's just a different read.

1 — Closed door. Intimacy happens off the page, or not at all.

2 — Mild. On the page, but brief and not explicit.

3 — Open door. Explicit, but not the point of the chapter.

4 — Explicit. Frequent and detailed.

5 — Very explicit. As explicit as the genre gets, often central to the plot.
